Release Day Review ~ Breathe Into Me by Sara Fawkes

Breathe Into MeTitle: Breathe Into Me
Author: Sara Fawkes
Genre: NA Contemporary Romance
Published: April 8th 2014

How did my life get so broken? It’s a question Lacey St. James asks herself every day. Stuck raising her little brother in a trailer park while she works a dead end job at a grocery store, she has a stalker exboyfriend, a bad reputation, and no way out.

And then, she meets Everett, who changes her entire existence.

Everett is an outsider who’s housesitting his family’s mansion off the coast, and for reasons Lacey can’t understand, he’s completely transfixed by her. He seems determined to show her that life can offer more than she’d ever hoped for, if only she believes in herself. She desperately yearns to trust him, but what happens when she finds out that everything he’s told her is a lie?
Breathe Into Me was a sweet and slightly heartbreaking read that I was completely swept away in. It deals with some difficult issues and shows people going through some difficult times in their lives. I went on an emotional journey with this book, facing sadness, happiness, betrayal and pride. The main characters relationship was built slowly and I enjoyed how the plot played out.

Lacey is a troubled girl but it is good to see that she is finally trying to take back control of her life. She has spent the past few years living in a trailer her mean Grandmother and her mother and brother. She has a boyfriend who is a little dark and all she wants is to escape. She decides to sit for her GED and things are improving with the help of a new friend. Her relationship with Everett grows slowly as she finds it difficult to let people in, but he has secrets too.

Everett is really a nice guy. Early on I had some suspicions about him and what was in his past but I wasn't sure what they were. He goes out of his way to do nice things for Lacey and I thought he was sweet. He makes her feel good about herself again and he seems to focus solely on her. But you can see that his secret has affected him deeply and he's unwilling to live through it again.

Lacey's friends that she had in the beginning really made me mad. Macon is just a good looking creep and Ashley is an A-grade biatch! I was glad Lacey decided they weren't anything and made new friends worth keeping – Everett, Tristan and Clare.

I was fascinated to see how Sara wove a few dark elements into the book. They are gut wrenching elements that had tears welling in my eyes. Camera phones can get anyone in trouble and it does in a big way for these characters. This common element makes and breaks the trust between these characters and they had to fight if they wanted happiness. It was intense and I enjoyed how the story played out in the end. I definitely be looking out for more books by this author; check it out for yourself, now!!

I received a copy of this book from the Publisher, via NetGalley in exchange for an honest review.

  3. You've sold me, Naomi. I'm definitely going to pick up this book. I love a slow building, slow-burn romance and it sounds like Breathe Into Me delivers that. I like the sound of Lacey maturing and Everett seems like a great guy. And, of course, I'm very curious about the darker elements. What can I say? I seriously have a dark side, I guess. ;) Excellent review!
