Feature & Follow #10

Feature & Follow is a blog hop hosted by Parajunkee & Alison Can Read. The purpose is to meet new people and gain more followers in the book blogging community. If this is your first time here, welcome! You are about to make some new friends and gain new followers — but you have to know — the point of this hop is to follow other bloggers also. I follow you, you follow me.

Here’s this week’s question:

What writing device or trick most irritates you when reading a book? For example, if an author employs an omnipotent narrator that is sometimes considered bad form.

I am currently reading a book that has irritated me a little. In the beginning of the book, the girl has had one of the worst childhood’s I’ve ever read about. She is so smart she finished high school two years early, she was even the Valedictorian. But her parents were so cruel to her that she has low self-esteem and trust issues. I shed a tear for her a few times.

But now that she met the boy, she has done a complete 180 and is a total different person, but I think she did it way too quickly. For someone to endure what she has would take some time to trust someone, but she has done it in a matter of days, and I found it a bit unbelievable.

What do you think?

  1. That would probably bother me a little too, the character's actions should be believable. Thanks for stopping by, I'm an old follower too :)

  2. Oh, I agree with your points. I don't care for cliffhangers, but mostly I hate anything that happens due to coincidence. I like logical steps to a conclusion.

  3. I would agree with you, that all that is unbelievable, if it didn't sound like my boyfriend. Your example is -too- perfect, yes, and turning around from all the hardships is never overnight, but the description hits close to home.

  4. I agree. Some writers forget that even though they're writing fiction, it still has to be believable.

    New GFC follower! Here's my F&F :)

  5. Ugh, it's just as annoying in books as it is in real life - someone changing themselves for a new boyfriend/girlfriend. Especially as the character you mentioned was very strong, until that moment.

  7. Nice answer. It is hard to believe a girl who has become strong while going through hardships would throw away her old self - for a boy. It's real weak.

  8. I agree. Some books have their characters change way to unrealistically!

I gate it when that happens. Some plots are not very credible these days!

  11. There's nothing worse than when an author skims over the important stuff! Or they take what they've told you of a character and flip it so that they do the most unbelievable things! Hate that! Good Answer!

  12. I agree. Changes like that need to happen over more than a few days, otherwise the story looses creditability.

Thanks for stopping by my FF :)

  14. I agree, that is a little quick for her to change. It's not believable.

  25. That is what happened, it was a very rushed book, and long too. Glad its done....

  29. It is annoying, but there's no way I could write a book, so credit to her for doing so!!

  30. That would definitely be a little irritating. It makes it seem way to convenient. I hate that.
