He was my older brother's best friend.
He was never supposed to be mine.
I thought we would get it out of our system and move on.

One of us did.
One of us left.

Now he’s back, looking at me like he wants to devour me. And all those feelings I’d turned into anger are brewing into something else, something that terrifies me.
He broke my heart last time.
This time he'll obliterate it.

I purchased Kaleidoscope Hearts when I was looking for an audio read. I am so glad that I did because it was a pretty sweet read. It’s a story of second chance love… two people who drifted apart, and after a tragic event, were bought back together.

The story begins with Ellie (Estelle) moving in with her brother, so she could make a fresh start (you’d have to read it to find out why). What she doesn’t expect is to cross paths with Oliver, after not seeing him in so long. She’s not ready for any kind of relationship, but he manages to find ways to be near her, including getting her a job working with the children at the hospital.

I liked how Ellie and Oliver slowly developed a relationship again. Oliver was patient with Ellie; he didn’t push her too much as they explored their friendship. Oliver would come to the house to hang out with Vic, just to see her. They went on a friend date, which was pretty amusing. But what happened between them before Oliver left for medical school, was always in the back of their minds.

Ellie wasn’t ready to move on after everything that she had been through. This particular element was tragic, and I could understand her hesitations, even though everyone is pushing her to do so. She slowly finds her way, letting go of things, and taking on new challenges. She had a kind heart and tried to avoid most conflict by keeping everyone happy. She finds strength in her best friend Mia, who has always been there for her.

I loved the significance of the Kaleidoscope Hearts with Oliver. This element was heartbreaking as well as sweet, and it was incredible to see how Ellie was able to take her channel that passion and make it into art.

I enjoyed how most of Oliver’s chapters were flashes of how their relationship developed in the past. I was able to see why he was hesitant, the respect he had for his best friend Vic, and what he felt for Ellie. How he saw his father had a big impact on what goals he set for himself. He was determined to be successful, so that he would be able to provide for the right girl. In the present, Oliver was a really nice guy, treated Ellie well and had possessive steaks when it counted!

I really enjoyed the narration by Christy Romano and Vikas Adam. I liked Christy’s chapters the most; she felt natural and I was easily swept away when she was narrating. Vikas Adam doesn’t have as many chapters, but he made me stop and listen. I didn’t find him as relaxed, but I enjoyed it nonetheless.

This is the first book that I have read by Claire Contreras, and it was a deep and emotional read. The characters have always been drawn together and find it hard to deny their feelings. They have strong family relationships too, which helped them all at some point throughout the story. I will definitely continue this series, because I am eager to see what happened between Mia and Jensen, close friends to both Ellie and Oliver.

His eyes search my face as if he’s looking for another answer. We stare at each other for a long time— long enough for my breath to quicken and my heart to begin to burn. Long enough for him to cup the back of my neck with his nimble fingers and pull my face to his abruptly, smashing his lips to mine.
