Review – Stealing Breath by Joanne Brothwell

Title: Stealing Breath
Author: Joanne Brothwell
Series: Stealing Breath #1
Genre: Paranormal Fantasy
Published: March 8th 2012

Book Description

Deep in the backwoods of North Dakota, twenty-one year old Sarah Ross is searching for a missing child when she is attacked by a glowing-eyed, transparent... creature. Sarah survives, destroying the monster by using mysterious abilities she didn't even know she had. Bloody and bruised, Sarah flees the scene and runs directly into Evan Valente, a handsome, charismatic stranger who helps her back to safety. But what is Evan doing out in the forest at five in the morning? Turning to a healer, Sarah is shocked to learn her eyes bear the mark of the Indigo Child-an evolved human with the ability to feel the emotions of others. But her indigo aura also makes her an easy target for those who wish to consume her powerful essence. Soon, Sarah is falling deeply in love with Evan and wants nothing more than to follow her heart and trust that he is the man he says he is. But she can't ignore the lingering feeling that Evan is hiding a terrible secret. The deeper she digs, the more danger she faces, leading her on a course that will force her to face the darkest, innermost parts of her soul.

My Review

What a great ride! Anything involving magic and auras keeps me intrigued and the direction of this story certainly captured me! I had read a few chapters and my husband asked me what I was reading, and I replied an interesting book which has spirits which try to inhabit other people. I really like the main character and she has genuine friends. But I'm not sure about the new guy she has met. He seems too perfect and has popped up at just the right time....so I’ll see how it goes…

Sarah has always been an empath and reading people's emotions has been easy for her. While camping she hears a voice and goes into the bush to answer the call for help. She stumbles upon a shack and runs into a spirit who tries to take her soul from her. She didn't realise that there were spirits out there that could do that, so she channels her inner powers to protect herself. While fleeing she literally runs into Evan who appears to be a knight in shining armour. I was initially suspicious of him, but like Sarah, he charmed me easily.

Sarah is a genuine person and has respect for the people she holds close. Her friends are very supportive but are curious about the new guy that has shown up in her life because Sarah has been burnt badly before. What I really liked about Sarah as her no bull crap attitude, you cross her and she won't forgive you easily, you have to earn that trust back and even if you do she still is sceptical.Evan just seems to know how to push the right buttons and is way too attractive for his own good!

As the cover of the book implicates, the book is about Sarah's aura, which is an indigo colour and is therefore rare. But with the help of the natives in the area, Sarah is able to understand more about herself and the people that she is close to.

I really enjoyed the direction of this story and I thought that Joanne Brothwell's writing style was beautiful. The ancient magic and the soul travel concepts were exciting. Stories containing good and bad magic are always an entertaining read for me and Stealing Breath was just dazzling! As usual, the chemistry with the two main characters is undeniable but I love the romance aspect, so it was a definite plus for me. I am hanging for the next book now!!

I received a copy of this book from the author in exchange for an honest review.

Cover Reveal – Wait For You by J. Lynn

Synopsis

Some things are worth waiting for…
Traveling thousands of miles from home to enter college is the only way nineteen-year-old Avery Morgansten can escape what happened at the Halloween party five years ago—an event that forever changed her life. All she needs to do is make it to her classes on time, make sure the bracelet on her left wrist stays in place, not draw any attention to herself, and maybe—please God—make a few friends, because surely that would be a nice change of pace. The one thing she didn’t need and never planned on was capturing the attention of the one guy who could shatter the precarious future she’s building for herself.

Some things are worth experiencing…
Cameron Hamilton is six feet and three inches of swoon-worthy hotness, complete with a pair of striking blue eyes and a remarkable ability to make her want things she believed were irrevocably stolen from her. She knows she needs to stay away from him, but Cam is freaking everywhere, with his charm, his witty banter, and that damn dimple that’s just so… so lickable. Getting involved with him is dangerous, but when ignoring the simmering tension that sparks whenever they are around each other becomes impossible, he brings out a side of her she never knew existed.

Some things should never be kept quiet…
But when Avery starts receiving threatening emails and phone calls forcing her to face a past she wants silenced, she’s has no other choice but to acknowledge that someone is refusing to allow her to let go of that night when everything changed. When the devastating truth comes out, will she resurface this time with one less scar? And can Cam be there to help her or will he be dragged down with her?

And some things are worth fighting for…

Review – Veiled Mist by Eleanor T. Beaty

Veiled Mist
Title: Veiled Mist
Author: Eleanor T. Beaty
Series: Veiled Mist #1
Genre: YA Paranormal Fantasy
Published: July 9th 2012

Book Description

On the Caribbean island of Maurray, spoiled-rotten, fifteen-year-old Hanna wakes up to a nightmare. She is not the daughter of an aristocrat but the orphan of a Gypsy. She is the descendant to a mystical Gypsy tribe. Their magic is strong and has lasted six hundred years. Ornella, the tribe’s guardian, arrives at the island with her mutt, Count Dracula, to guide Hanna. Hanna is told she must embrace her heritage or die at the ripe age of seventeen. But Hanna does the unthinkable, she chooses death. She hates Gypsies and would rather die. What she doesn’t know is that her death will destroy the entire tribe. What she also doesn’t know is how persuasive Ornella can be. The nightmare begins.

My Review

When I started to read this book, my heart wasn't into it. Initially, I didn't like the main character Hanna, she was a spoilt teenager who looked down her nose at people and thought she was better than everyone else. The old Gypsy, Ornella was a bit of a pain, but was able to wield some great magic. But the longer I read the book, I was able to learn more about the characters and they both grew on me. They end up building a great relationship and work together to fulfil Hanna's destiny. Secrets are unlocked, enemies are exposed and friendships, old and new are formed.

The magic aspect of this book was awesome. Ornella uses lots of unusual ingredients to perform spells and rituals, even down to various types of pee. The author has put a great deal of thought into the different spells and it was definitely entertaining. The use of the dolls throughout the book was unusual too, but also intriguing. The dolls are not only important to the people that Hanna gives them to, but they help Hanna discover the true person that she is.

Hanna is a typical teenager and in the beginning, appearances and reputation play a major role in how she acts. Once she gets past this, she becomes a better person who I really liked. A lot of her immediate family have big roles in her development as well and I enjoyed getting to know them too. Veiled Mist is a beautiful story of self discovery and I enjoyed Hanna's journey.

I received a copy of this book from the author in exchange for an honest review.

Author Interview

Hi Dusty! Thank you for taking the opportunity to chat with me today!!

Thanks for hosting me on my Anniversary Blog Tour!

I have a few questions, nothing too stressful.... here we go!!

How long did it take to write Shadow Eyes? Did you have to wait long for it to be published?

D: It took about 8 months initially, but that’s before extensive revising and editing!  I think I was still messing with it until I was signed by Musa Publishing another 8 months after I finished the initial draft.  It seemed like a long time to wait, but I’m pretty sure that’s just how it goes for new authors, and established ones for that matter.

Where did you get the idea of the Shadows?

D: The idea actually first came to me as a screenplay for a Christian horror movie of some sort.  The movie would have been about a cast of intertwined characters going about their lives and making mistakes with dark, creepy shadows (demons) hovering around them, whispering to them, and influencing them to do evil things.  Only the audience would see the shadows.  The characters would be completely oblivious.  I simply tweaked that idea until I had something workable for a YA book - a 17-year-old girl who had this special ability to see the shadows and light figures when nobody else could.

I found Shadow Eyes to be a very emotional journey. Do you plan on it being such an emotional story?

D: Yes and no.  I went into it knowing the ending, of course, so I knew at least that much was going to be pretty emotional.  I actually wrote a few parts of the end early on in the first draft (I guess I just couldn’t wait!).  The rest of her emotional journey throughout I planned in my outline, but I’m not sure I realized how many different facets of emotions I’d end up having my characters explore and my readers indirectly experience.

When you began writing Shadow Eyes, did you stick to your writing plan or did you keep throwing twists in while writing the book?

D: Good question!  I wrote a very detailed outline before writing much of the actual book, so that was when all the crazy twists and subplots came to me.  I can’t tell you how much that outline helped me!  With different twists that needed to be foreshadowed and subplots that needed to be weaved in here and there, it helped me to look through my outline in order to remember every aspect of the plot.  While writing the outline, though, there were some definite twists and surprises that worked their way into the story without me thinking of them initially.  That was always exciting!  A lot of work to add them in, but exciting nonetheless!

How much of yourself or from personal experience have you put into the characters?

D: Oh, bits and pieces here and there. Iris has a few of my characteristics – being a perfectionist and an organizational freak mainly…I’m not kidding, sometimes I seriously think I have OCD.  The funny bit about Iris’s sister waking up and showering in the middle of the night actually came from my sister who used to do the same thing!  Also, I also went on a spelunking trip with my Advanced Earth Science class and a goofy teacher who didn’t know what he was doing, just like Mr. Keller.  However, the thing with the boy in the cave…that didn’t happen to me. J

There are a number of yummy guys in Iris’s life that play a major role in the book, did you intend on having so many guys fighting for her?

D: Lol!  Yummy – I think that term is very fitting for them!  Well, there are mainly just two, but yes I purposefully included the love triangle.  They always say, “Write what you’d want to read,” and I love love triangles!  I think it helps add suspense and interest, but also, as a female reader, we get to either act as the protagonist’s best friend, offering our advice on whom she should pick, or we get to live vicariously through her and feel what it’s like to have two guys vying for our attention.  How awesome would that be?  Okay, I’m married…but if I were single…how awesome would that be?

Ok, so here are some fun questions...

Do you have any favourite authors that you read today?

D: Suzanne Collins, Veronica Roth, Becca Fitzpatrick, Lauren Kate, Rick Riordan, Kaitlin Bevis (she’s a fellow Musan!)

If you could travel in a time machine into a book, what book would it be and why?

D: Oh, wow, that would be awesome!  Sadly, though, two of my favourite books (The Hunger Games and Divergent) wouldn’t be my first choices – I don’t think I’d like to live in those dystopian worlds.  Hmm…how about Pride and Prejudice?  I would love to see 19th century England!  …And Mr. Darcy, of course!

Do you have a favourite book boyfriend?

D: You mean besides Patrick in Shadow Eyes?  Lol!  Okay, maybe that’s too weird since I created him – can a writer have a crush on her own characters?  Is that against some author code or protocol I am unaware of?  Well…besides him, I might have to go with Tobias from Divergent!  There are too many to choose from, but I really liked his character!

If you could travel anywhere in the world with a book, where would you go and what book would you take??

D: Interesting question!  I would go to some remote island, and I would take the next book in whatever favourite series just had a recent release (right now that would be Finale from the Hush Hush series or Rick Riordan’s The Mark of Athena – I know I’m a little late in reading both). Either way, it would be a new book.  I’m kind of weird in that I never read a book more than once.  My time is just so precious, and there are so many good books out there I want to read!  I’d rather continue tackling my TBR list than read an old favourite…although I have come close a few times.  Insurgent was probably the closest I’ve come – I almost reread it immediately after finishing it!  J

Thank you so much for allowing me to participate in the tour and for chatting with me today!

Thank you!  The pleasure was all mine!

Book Description

When her parents’ rock band The Pack performs at Zach’s bar, Mandy discovers her True Mate, Joe Blackwolf, the band’s lead singer and guitarist. Joe Blackwolf is celebrating his fortieth birthday. And what he wishes for when he blows out the candles is to find his True Mate. He succeeds when he meets Mandy Goldwolf. Problem is…she belongs to someone else. A Romantica® paranormal erotic romance from Ellora’s Cave

Excerpt

“Am I dead, Angel? Cause you look like you’re straight from heaven!”

“That has to be the worst line I’ve ever heard,” Mandy laughed, looking up into warm brown eyes. She shivered as he settled into the chair beside her.

“Maybe, but it made you laugh.” He took her hand. “Can I buy you a drink?”

Joe waved over a waiter and ordered for them without once releasing her hand. She could feel the rough calluses guitar playing had created on his fingers, but they turned her on. He turned her on.

This was Joe? “Good ole Joe” as Eddie called him. He was neither good nor old. No. He was gorgeous…and talented. Zach wasn’t kidding when he’d said this Blackwolf was a great guitarist and singer. For the first time since Carly bugged her, she wished with all her might she hadn’t lied about Zach being her mate. Zach might be handsome, but Joe made her throb in places that hadn’t throbbed in all of her thirty-five years.

“So what’s with the camera, Angel? Fan or reporter?”

Mandy looked down at her fingers clenched around her camera strap. If she told him who she was, he’d back off so fast she’d see skid marks on the floor. Just this once, she wanted to pretend she was someone else. Just tonight. She leaned forward pressing her lips against his ear.

“I’m more than a fan. I’m a groupie. Can’t you tell?” He shuddered, turning his head he met her gaze. The fire glowing in his eyes set her boiling. Yes. She had to have him. Now.

“A groupie? For just any rock musician?”

“No, Joe. I want you.”

“Fuck, yeah,” he growled, standing so abruptly his chair toppled over. No one nearby noticed as he dragged her to her feet. “Where?”

Mandy looked over toward the hallway leading to Zach’s office and smiled. They had a clear path. She pulled him after her and they ducked into the shadowy space. He pressed her to the wall and took her mouth in a deep kiss. Their mouths meshed together. Joe pulled back to nip at her lips, then ran his tongue along the inside edge of her lower lip. She caught his long dark hair in her fingers, holding his mouth to hers.

Fire. Heat. She’d never felt anything like this in her entire life. She moaned as his mouth slid to nuzzle her neck. Mandy wrapped her free arm around him, clutching his leather jacket. She lifted her right leg along his hip. He stepped into the opening she’d created, thrusting his hips against hers.
She shivered as his rough fingers slid along her leg and under her skirt. He slipped his fingers under her panties and cupped her ass. Grasping her, he pulled her more firmly against his hard cock. He reached up to her peasant top, untying the drawstring to bare her bra covered breast. His hot breath teased her neck and then his warm tongue grazed her skin as he licked his way over her curves

“Hey. Anyone seen Joe?” Mandy and Joe froze as she heard Eddie’s voice. He was close. Too close. She looked out of the entrance of the hall. She didn’t see him, but he was right there. She knew it. Mandy closed her eyes, fighting to keep her panting excitement from giving them away.

“I think I saw him with a hot chick earlier. I didn’t get a good look at her though. Just noticed she was his type.” Tom responded with a laugh.

Joe groaned in her ear, and kissed her cheek. She turned to look up at him. He was still on fire, she could see it but there was a definite question in his dark eyes? Stop or go?

She lowered her leg and he sighed, then she smiled and grabbed his hand. “This way,” she whispered.

Mandy knew there was an empty unlocked office back here and she wanted this wolf and she wanted him now. He chuckled as they moved into the darkness. She found the door on the right and turned the knob. Hearing the click, she pushed, wincing at the creak when the door stuck. He pushed her through and they shut the door behind them. Mandy flipped the light switch, blinking a bit to adjust to the table lamps that came on. She’d been expecting an overhead. They looked at each other and grinned.

Joe pulled her over to the empty desk and she climbed up onto it. He stroked her cheek. “You’re sure?”

“Yes. I don’t want to stop. Not now.”

About the Author

Hi. I’m Francesca Hawley and I’m a fat chick. A woman with dangerous curves just like my heroines.

Many people don’t like the word, “fat” but I do because it’s the truth and I’ve learned to own it.  I am a fat chick and I always will be. Even if my fairy godmother popped in right at this moment and waved her wand to make me a size 2, I know that mentally and emotionally I’d still be a fat chick. So why is this relevant? Well, my size has had a major influence on how I see the world and how I write.

I first began to read romance when I was in my teens. I loved the genre, but the heroines were all thin. Their thighs didn’t rub together…had never rubbed together…and frankly I had trouble relating to these ladies. The stories were great—full of emotion and well told, but the heroines weren’t like me and that was a major disappointment.  I kept wondering where were the fat heroines? I found some occasionally, but to have their Happily Ever After they usually had to lose weight and go from ugly duckling to swan.

Well, I wanted a fat heroine who loved herself—or at least learned to love herself—and a hot alpha hero who liked her jiggly bits just the way they were. Since I didn’t find many big girls to read about, I decided  to write about them myself. After all, I loved to write anyway and had been writing almost as long as I’d been reading, so Francesca Hawley – author of Romance with Dangerous Curves was born.

In a Francesca Hawley romance, my readers will find authentic, sensual, fat heroines who love and are loved by their intense, passionate, and seductive Alpha heroes. I hope you enjoy their dangerous curves just as much as their hunky heroes do.
